Long read... Be warned! ;)
The once Emperor state to now the Prague spring....
My husband asked me why Prague?
Well I'm curious to witness and see how it all fits in. Their history is of a long power struggle to what starts of with a free spirit community.
From the Boii Celts creating the Bohemian region to the Germanic tribe that toss them out. To the long dynasty and family dispute leading... on to the Royal Roman Empire. Only to be torn down by family dispute and the Pope's ordered crusaders.
War then broke between Protestant and Catholic. As the recover, a French agent burns the city down!
I swear it's better than a movie!
As this resilient country prosper it attracts the Jewish merchants who made Austria Queen uncomfortable she order war on them using Prussian army before allowing them back to a ghetto.
Anyway, as WW1 ended, the Austro- Hungarian dynasty fell.
At this stage the city was ethnically mixed. Imagine it was a time of Germanic speaking Jewish community ( you just won't put the word German and Jewish together would you!). They apparently drove the Germanic tribe out to minority..
Then arrive the Nazis and the Holocaust starts...doing the reverse!. So was the WW2!
The oppression of people was unreal! Until finally the Czech uprising with help of Russia to revolt the Nazi.
Their saviour brought them the Soviet era... Sigh...and so communism begins...
Can you imagine the Nobelsman, the writers, the Baroque Era, the intellects lives under communism.... It was impossible living for smart and creative mind hence Prague Spring!! they aim for democratic reform.
Finally in 1993 they broke free from all the soviet influence.
I always imagine Bohemian to be gypsy like, carefree anti establishment. Why did the Boii create a region? Isn't that the opposite of Bohemianism?
How amazing is that this city was once the central city of The Roman Empire, making King Charles the emperor. I cannot even begin to imagine how powerful that man is because the city prosper until he died, then war broke out.
He loves gothic style I wonder if any architecture still stands?
I'm curious at the missing journal written by Ibrahim ibn Ya'qub about early history of Prague and the missing pages from The Codex Gigas that was stolen by the Swedish army. This was written in the monastery and what was so important that this was taken and some pages were removed? Hmmm.
What I'm hoping to see is the medieval era presence in Prague. I can't wait to see the architecture of the buildings and the feel of this building in the old town.
How amazing it would be to walk on the Charles bridge and be part of history from 1357 to my present time of 2013..Imagine what a different world it is...the hardship, the raging war, the love, the cry.. All the people that have walked that bridge in history.
I hope I can find a cafe at the old town square and I'm want to visit the Jewish quarters and Prague Ghetto.
If I have time I'd love to go to the new town to feel the era of Renaissance of new town and Medieval in old town. Would there be obvious difference?
How much of all this history is already destroyed by democracy? Hardly I hope because of die hard communism and socialist are still in Parliment so is the civic and liberal democrats and the Christian party. Their split parties causes coalition with split goals, still resulting in weak government. Cherry on the cake the President is anti communism. So they have a mixed bag!
Their political landscape reminds me somewhat of Malaysia's right now.
So how can it not be Prague!
In a taxi to the airport....
